Yahoo has reportedly increased its market share by including a new feature to its news pages for some of its users.
Last month Yahoo managed to increase its market share while Google dropped a point. Web metrics firm Comscore has attributed this gain to the company adding contextual information and services to its basic search function.
Comscore says, "Yahoo sites and Microsoft sites have experienced gains due in part to the continued use of contextual search approaches that tie content and related search results together."
Yahoo says that its “infinite browse” facility adds contextual information to news searches. It also adds a range of other features, links and images to articles that are viewed.
Product managers at Yahoo have explained in a blog post that “infinite browse” could increase user traction and boost interaction. Perhaps it shouldn’t be described as infinite quite yet, however, as it is only available within the company and to a limited number of public users.
The Yahoo bloggers stated, “We are currently only testing this module with a fraction of visitors, so if you can't find it on Yahoo! News yet, stay tuned."
The new technology can be seen as another move by Yahoo to make inroads into Google’s search engine dominance.
