Research by comScore has revealed some surprising data when it comes to the habits of women on the internet. Although they are still slightly in the minority in terms of global web users, they are catching up with men, and once online they spend an average of two hours more on the internet than their male counterparts.
comScore found that women exceed men particularly in terms of the time they spend communicating online, spending around a third of their time on social networking sites, emailing and sending instant messages. Women aged 45 or older showed the highest growth in social networking.
Women also spend more time than men sharing photos online and online shopping. This may not come as a great surprise to many but what might be news for many is that women also outpace men in terms of time spent gaming online. Female gamers over the age of 55 spend more time gaming than any other demographic and favour puzzle, card and board games.
In addition it appears that women are almost as likely as men to visit gambling sites on the internet and over a third of women now visit sex-themed sites, compared to almost half of men.
