Paywall costs Times two-thirds of online readership

26/07/2010
Official figures for the effects of the Times's new internet paywall show that the newspaper's site has lost 66 per cent of its traffic.

Experian Hitwise, which monitors internet traffic, said the biggest drop, of 58 per cent, came in the weeks before the paywall, when visitors were asked to register to view Times articles.

Some media commentators are saying that the drop is not as bad as the 90 per cent fall that some had feared.

News International, the parent company of the Times and Sunday Times, declined to comment on the numbers.
