A survey released today by Pew Research Center in the US has found that Americans now prefer to get their news from online sources rather than newspapers.
The survey was carried out between 28 December and 19 January. It showed that online news has become the third most popular news source for people in the US, after local and national TV.
Some 61 per cent of those asked said that on a typical day they get their news online, while 78 per cent get their news from local news stations and 71% from a national TV network or cable channel.
Further down the scale, 54 per cent of people listen to news on the radio, 50 per cent regularly read a local newspaper and only 17 per cent read a national newspaper. Newspapers have been going through tough times in the States, with a number closing down last year or instigating massive job cuts.
It was revealed in the survey that 90 per cent of people use more than one source to find news, with 57 per cent checking out between two and five websites per day for their news content.
The survey also showed that 33 per cent of mobile phone users access news on their phones.
